SRC standard explanation
Are you sure you really know what the SRC standard is?
In order to answer the question, we asked our quality manager to tell us a little more about the anti-slip standard.
The first question we ask ourselves "Why? ".
Why has the European Union implemented this 20344: 2011 standard for work shoes?
Patrick V: An evocative figure: 60% of work accidents are due to slips. Everything is explained.
The European Community evaluates the anti-slip of work shoes, the standard is intended to be applicable on the majority of the sites where the surfaces are smooth therefore most of the time inside.
“To make a sole design that passes the tests, you have to take into account the material and the profile. "
The second question is "How"?
How are test methods (tests) carried out to assess the non-slip characteristics of a sole?
PV: There are two types of tests, the SRA test and the SRB test, and if the tested sole passes these 2 tests it is then SRC!
The first test, the SRA, is carried out on a ceramic surface coated with industrial-type detergent.
The second test, the SRB, takes place on a smooth steel floor coated with glycerin.
For each test method, the test takes place in 2 phases.
The first phase, the shoe is flat, the second phase, the shoe is tilted on the heel by 7% upwards.
The machines calculate by restoring a coefficient of friction.
Minimum coefficient to be obtained to be in accordance with the standard:
Standard | Flat | Inclined |
SRA | 0.32 | 0.28 |
SRB | 0.18 | 0.13 |
The third and last question to ask yourself: For what purpose?
PV: Before choosing a particular shoe model, it is essential to clearly identify the needs. Depending on the profession and the risk involved, an SRA standard sole may be sufficient. However, in many professions the risk of slipping is real and requires good footwear equipment.
Can you tell us a little more about the Nord'Ways anti-slip projects?
PV: I would just say: During development, the first tests are very promising! Expected release soon so stay tuned!
